The Vision

The Challenge

A multipurpose space that allowed the owners to make the most of Sydney's glorious summers and cold, dreary winters.

There were a lot of moving parts to the reconstruction of this upper North Shore property's outdoor space. A pool, new deck, major excavation work, boundary fencing, fire pit area and plenty of stonework. Coordinating each element exposed some logistical challenges, but nothing we couldn't overcome.

The Outcome

A versatile outdoor space built for all seasons. There's a lot packed into a relatively small and awkwardly L-shaped space, but each element flows beautifully into the next. The contrasting styles of the modern pool finish with the rustic BBQ and seating areas complement each other perfectly.

Work Completed

A versatile space built for all seasons.

This simple Normanhurst backyard has been transformed into a stunning poolside retreat. Designed by Branch Out Landscape Design, the journey began with significant site preparation, including major excavation works and the careful removal of existing timber edging, sleepers, and decorative stones. Strategically placed subsoil drainage was then installed to ensure structural integrity to the home and new landscape.

The property’s side access has been elegantly repurposed with a BBQ and intimate outdoor dining and seating arrangement, accompanied by a neighbouring firepit area. Adding to the space’s rustic chic is the crushed granite flooring that connects the 2 distinct areas. Along with bluestone crazy paving, large sandstone steppers, and cobblestone bordering, accented by a recycled brick retaining wall. The cast iron fire pit is small but mighty, throwing off enough heat to warm the entire section of the yard.

A NewTechWood composite deck now provides a relaxing poolside lounge area, with its open north-western exposure capturing the best of the summer afternoon sun. For improved privacy and pool compliance, we’ve installed a new timber boundary fence, standing 1.8m above the deck.

The garden design perfectly blends structure and softness. Sir Walter Buffalo turf provides a lush, durable green carpet, while Corten Steel edging offers a modern touch. The planting scheme features a carefully curated selection of species, each contributing to the garden's year-round appeal. Pennisetum Nafray, with its arching feathery plumes, adds movement and texture to contrast beautifully with the structured, deep green foliage of Liriope Muscari. The bold, sculptural leaves of Kalanchoe Beharensis serve as striking focal points, while the compact, glossy leaves of Acmena Smithii Minor (Dwarf Lilly Pilly) provide a lush, evergreen backdrop.

Lomandra Lime Tuff adds a bright, fresh touch - juxtaposed by the thick, succulent leaves of Crassula Ovata. These two varietals are renowned for their drought tolerance and resilience, with the latter even able to store water, ensuring the landscape remains vibrant even in dry conditions. Together, each of these plant selections bring their own aesthetic appeal, and being relatively low-maintenance and hardy means the garden will thrive in Sydney’s temperamental climate.

This poolside oasis is now a harmonious blend of relaxation and elegance, a genuine reflection of thoughtful design and meticulous execution.
